2020 Castello Romitorio Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy (750ml)

A bright and expressive red wine produced in Montalcino from this Brunello estate’s youngest Sangiovese vineyards. A Rosso di Montalcino is like the younger sibling of the producer's more powerful and deeply flavored Brunello. The fruit is usually a little more forward, the tannins a little softer. And the price is usually a little more gentle too. ;>)

Producer notes: "Garnet red color, clear and translucent. The inviting nose is typical of Sangiovese, with a penetrating aroma of marasca cherries. With refinement in the bottle, this fresh and pungent cherry scent becomes sweet and dried. In young wines the note of fruit is pure and of variable intensity from one year to another."

Montalcino is an area particularly suited to the production of fine wines, and Rosso di Montalcino was recognized as a designation of origin in 1983, giving the opportunity to produce two designations of origin from the same vineyards for the first time in Italy; Brunello, destined for lengthy ageing, and the fresher, more vivacious Rosso di Montalcino. It can be made only from Sangiovese grapes, and can be marketed only from the beginning of September in the year following that of harvest.
