Ohishi 10 Year Brandy Cask Whisky, Japan (750ml)
Fukano Vault Reserve 2 was announced in November 2018 alongside three other limited edition expressions: Fukano Vault Reserve 1, Fukano 6000 and Fukano Jikan. All four limited edition expressions are a combination of whiskies between the ages of 3 and 11 years old. Some of the whisky was first matured in casks and then moved over to be kept in different tanks for up to 16 years to rest. After tasting each tank individually, the brand created four different combinations from the tanks. 5,443 bottles were produced globally and it is bottled at 40.5% ABV.
In 1823, Fukano was the first distillery in the Kumamoto region to mature its shochu in barrels, a novel practice spearheaded by Chizuru Fukano, the mother of current distillery president Seiichi Fukano. It’s this post-distillation wood aging that turns the fresh shochu into something more accurately classified as whisky. Rather than the traditional barley malt, Fukano uses a combination of malted and un-malted rice for their distillates.
