2018 Bisci Verdicchio di Matelica Vigneto Fogliano, Marche, Italy (750ml)

The Verdicchio grape is capable of much more than is typically found in the larger Castelli di Jesi appellation of the Marche region, and up in the mountains there is a much smaller zone called Matelica where the wines show more intensity ~

The Marche region of Italy is on the eastern side of the Apennine Mountains and borders the Adriatic. There is a lot of Verdicchio produced in Castelli di Jesi appellation that is frequently cheap and fairly simple. The Verdicchio grape is capable of much more, however, and up in the mountains there is a much smaller zone called Matelica where the wines show more intensity, more pronounced minerality and more complexity as well. Bisci is one of the best producers in Matelica, and their 'Vigneto Fogliano' bottling is a single vineyard wine from their oldest parcel. Only 1,000 cases made. Crisp and focused, no oak, long, stony finish, very dry. Bisci’s wine also ages quite well, and a bottling like this will develop in the cellar for 7-10 years. ~ Peter Granoff, Master Sommelier
