Cantena Zapata is the oldest Argentine family winery still owned and operated by the family and has been a pioneer farming high altitude vineyards since 1902. Laura Catena embarked on a journey to find the true expression of Malbec many years ago, and it is truly a speical treat and honor to host her for this amazing tasting.

Bodegas Catena and Nicholas Catena Zapata have received numerous awards, including Wine Enthusiast’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Laura Catena’s latest accolade is the Drinks Business' 2022 Woman of the Year.

Laura's emphasis on the study of soil profiles, the responsible use of water, and sustainable viticulture have paved the way for Catena Family to uphold its mission of protecting the land and the environment that surrounds them.

They grow their grapes on ungrafted vines, which are considered to have a more profound relationship with the soil since the vines are on their original rootstock. In addition, they propagate new vines through Massale selections (new vines from cuttings not cloning) of Malbec and Cabernet that no longer exist in Europe.

In Mendoza, Catena’s vines have adapted for over 170 years to the local climate conditions. They achieve this adaptation to climate change and disease resistance by using cuttings of their best vines rather than purchasing clones that originate in other regions.
