2020 COS Cerasuolo Di Vittoria Classico DOCG, Sicily, Italy (750ml)

Cerasuolo di Vittoria is an appellation around the town of Vittoria within the province of Ragusa as well as Caltanissetta and Catania. It became a DOC in 1973 and was elevated to DOCG status in 2005, making it the only DOCG in Sicily.

The varietal blend must always be 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Frappato. This 2020 went through spontaneous fermentation on the skins with indigenous yeasts and was aged in large, neutral Slovenian oak casks. It delivers a bit of the fruity plum, prune-like flavors from the Nero d'Avola on the mid palate but with more sophisticated vibrant cherry notes as well as slightly earthy, herbal sage-like, red floral lift, with good balancing acidity and light tannic structure from the Frappato. It is a wonderful expression of Cerasuolo di Vittoria and is rather refined for the appellation. COS was founded in 1980 by three friends, Giambattista (Titta) Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino (Rino) Strano (COS is the acronym of their surnames.) They wanted to make wine like their Sicilian ancestors had from the area's main grapes, Frappato and Nero d'Avola. In time they converted their vineyards to biodynamic farming and changed the face of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria wines.
