2022 Institut Agricole Regional Petite Arvine, Valle d'Aosta, Italy (750ml)

As the name implies, Institut Agricole Régional, is a regional agricultural institution located near the town of Aosta dedicated to education, research and experimentation in agriculture. For the field of education, it offers both technical and vocational training in agriculture, agri-food and agro industries at its school and college where ‘the purpose of the college service is to promote the process of socialization and human, civil and cultural growth of the students.’

There is a working farm which includes all kinds of crops from plants, cereals, fruits and vegetables to dairy and meat products, and of course wine! A modern winery was established in 2005 from which over a dozen wines are produced from most of the main varietals of the region. We recently had the opportunity to taste through most of the wines they make and they were all quite impressive, showing great balance and varietal integrity. We thought this Petite Arvine would be a nice introduction to the winery's winemaking style. The fruit comes comes from a vineyard on the hill of Aosta at 620 meters, or 2,034 feet above sea level with a 35% gradient, which is pretty darn steep and high! It was fermented in stainless steel tank and aged on its lees for five months with an additional month in bottle before release. It really stood out for its vibrant citrus and floral nose and its appealing, fleshy core of fruit on the mid palate. The wine finishes in a clean and sleek way with good balancing acidity. The wine speaks to its alpine character well and would be a natural pairing with hard alpine cheeses and salumi. Enjoying them together may even make you think you're in the shadow of Mont Blanc! Just over 200 cases were made.
