Sangiovese, the most widely planted grape in Italy, shows up in your glass as Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino, among others. The last 30 years have seen a renaissance of wines made with Sangiovese. Once associated with the rough, thin, uninteresting Chianti in bulbous raffia wrapped bottles, known as fiasci, today’s Sangiovese based wines exhibit a wide range of interpretations depending on growing region and producer.

By most measures the most lauded interpretation of Sangiovese is Brunello di Montalcino. This area around the hill town of Montalcino is ideal for Sangiovese. Brunello wines have the potential to cellar well for many years, and to develop considerable complexity with time.

Rosso di Montalcino DOC wines grown in the same area as Brunello, are only required to be aged for one year before release compared to a minimum of five for Brunello. The shorter aging produces wines that are generally intended to be consumed within a few years of bottling.

Finally, Chianti, first documented in the early 1400’s, originally contained up to 30% white grapes along with Sangiovese. Today’s wines from Chianti, with its seven sub-zones, are significantly better than even 20 years ago. This is the result of a decade or more of serious clonal work with Sangiovese, as well as more focused attention to viticulture and winemaking in every respect.
